The Coziest Winter Nail Colors for January 2022

The Coziest Winter Nail Colors for January 2022

The beginning of a new year often has us all feeling like starting off fresh by taking on better habits, getting rid of old ones, and—most commonly—changing up our look. While others are hitting the squats and going into the salon for a pixie cut, why not start slow and steady with a cozy winter manicure in a color that feels new to you? It takes only a little courage to step outside your usual OPI Lincoln Park After Dark or Essie Bordeaux, which is all you need to kick 2022 off on a fanciful foot.  From new wintry takes on classic dark nail colors to unique pops of color that'll have you feeling the opposite of boring, these are the best nail colors to try this January and tick off all the way into spring.

16 Kitchen Design Trends Southern Designers Predict Will Be Everywhere in 2022

16 Kitchen Design Trends Southern Designers Predict Will Be Everywhere in 2022

There's no denying how the pandemic fundamentally changed the world—including how we live (and work) inside our homes. An overall trend toward celebrating the history and originality of our homes is displacing ultramodern aesthetics and sharp lines as we all look to create cozier, colorful, more personalized spaces that better suit our lifestyles. We're turning away from big-box stores and toward vintage items—first, out of necessity due to supply-chain issues, and now, for design reasons—to add charm and character to every room in the house, including the kitchen. Here, interior designers from around the South share their predictions for what's trending in kitchen design for 2022 and beyond.

Give your kitchen a down-home, authentic feel by incorporating nostalgic style elements.

Our first kitchen features a small but efficient island that holds refrigerator drawers and a bookcase for cookbooks. Painted deep gray to contrast with the lighter color of the cabinets and topped with marble, it feels vintage and perhaps even original to the house.

1930s Throwback Kitchen

Style and Sensibility

This small, 1930s kitchen returns to its retro roots without sacrificing modern space and functionality. The center island replaces enough counter space to fit a clothes washer and dryer in the room. Details like the farmhouse sink and green glass tile add throwback style.

Rustic Lake House Kitchen

To complement the rustic wood wall, Designer Richard Tubb chose freestanding restaurant-grade stainless steel cabinetry and enlisted blacksmith Darren Hardman to craft a custom steel island. Open shelving confines dishware to the essentials, while a row of bare Edison lightbulbs provides general and task lighting.

Salvage Finds

Some of the best treasures in this kitchen are found objects. The homeowners used old ship lights for a chandelier in the kitchen. Shrimpers’ rope accents the edge of the countertop that is supported by columns found at another old house.

Adding to the overall mix of styles and time periods in the kitchen, a vintage-inspired iron chandelier hangs above the sleek center island. Hand-scraped wood flooring by Shaw Floors is made from recycled materials and mimics the look of antique wide-plank floors.

The inset cabinets and bin pulls add to the old-house aesthetic of the room. The homeowners decided to splurge on details in the kitchen and family room because they knew that they would spend most of their time in that area.

To keep the room from feeling too flat, add color and texture with accessories such as curtains and a jute rug. The vintage look of the house is reinforced with a new tongue-and-groove wood-plank ceiling and a trio of oversize globe lights, a splurge item.
