Now, this is a dorm room we'd be happy to come home to!

Southerners have a unique knack for making a house a home – even in the most challenging spaces. Samford University student Alycia Araj certainly relied on her Southern style to decorate her sophomore-year dorm room.

When Alycia arrived in her new home-away-from-home, the dorm room was sterile and lacked personality. With the help of her mom, she slowly transformed the space into a cozy, colorful haven. The Cocoa Beach, Florida native brought tropical influences into her new space along with the comfort and charm of Southern style. Shiplap meets island vibes in this extravagantly designed college dorm room.

To successfully embellish a tiny room, Alycia had to master the skill of making the most of a small space. It's best to cover drawers and closet spaces with fabric; this minimizes distractions and makes the space seem less cluttered. And, Alycia used lots of trinkets, photos, and motifs to personalize her room. With the monogrammed door, hanging palm fronds, and bright, coral bedding – she made the small space her own. When it comes to upgrading living quarters, Southerners know how to get the job done!
