San Francisco-based designer Kelley Flynn gives us her best advice on how to create summertime style indoors
With summer in full swing and a constant emphasis on spending time outdoors, it's important to remember that you don't have to limit your entertaining to the backyard. Here we've gathered a few of our favorite decorating approaches that enable you to escape the heat and enjoy a summertime vibe inside the comfort of your own home.
1. Be Inspired by Your Environment
Whether you live in the mountains, the desert, or near the beach, draw inspiration from the natural elements in your surroundings. Think wooden accent pieces and natural imagery.
2. Use Natural Materials
It's easy to find chic, classic pieces made from natural materials such as wood, granite, and stone. Furnish your home with wooden chairs and tables or select stone for countertops and table tops. Or for a more unique look, a tree trunk can take the place of a conventional table base.
3. Illuminate Your Space with Natural Light
Get ride of bulky window treatments that block light from the outdoors. Place emphasis on the windows with the best views and use fabrics, such as linen, that diffuse natural light.
4. Accessorize with Flowers & Plants
Fresh flowers add gorgeous color and delicious scents to your space. Fabrics and wallpaper in floral prints are equally as asthetically pleasing and require much less maintence. It's a win-win!
