The Coziest Winter Nail Colors for January 2022

The Coziest Winter Nail Colors for January 2022

The beginning of a new year often has us all feeling like starting off fresh by taking on better habits, getting rid of old ones, and—most commonly—changing up our look. While others are hitting the squats and going into the salon for a pixie cut, why not start slow and steady with a cozy winter manicure in a color that feels new to you? It takes only a little courage to step outside your usual OPI Lincoln Park After Dark or Essie Bordeaux, which is all you need to kick 2022 off on a fanciful foot.  From new wintry takes on classic dark nail colors to unique pops of color that'll have you feeling the opposite of boring, these are the best nail colors to try this January and tick off all the way into spring.

16 Kitchen Design Trends Southern Designers Predict Will Be Everywhere in 2022

16 Kitchen Design Trends Southern Designers Predict Will Be Everywhere in 2022

There's no denying how the pandemic fundamentally changed the world—including how we live (and work) inside our homes. An overall trend toward celebrating the history and originality of our homes is displacing ultramodern aesthetics and sharp lines as we all look to create cozier, colorful, more personalized spaces that better suit our lifestyles. We're turning away from big-box stores and toward vintage items—first, out of necessity due to supply-chain issues, and now, for design reasons—to add charm and character to every room in the house, including the kitchen. Here, interior designers from around the South share their predictions for what's trending in kitchen design for 2022 and beyond.

Erin Glennon transformed this Kiawah Island vacation home for easy entertaining without feeling too beachy. When designer Erin Glennon set out to transform this Kiawah Island vacation home, there were a few specific things to consider: the clients have five children and often entertain, so the home sees a lot of foot traffic. Additionally, the clients wanted to avoid the stereotypical "beach home" look (aka seashell soaps and coral lamps). Glennon did utilize a mix of modern and traditional elements to create a comfortable but chic look that feels right at home in its Lowcountry location. Take a look at what Erin Glennon did to transform this island retreat to a classic and cool home.

The Pool

While this house was a close distance to the beach, the homeowners were “keen on having a pool to cool off in on hot days and in the evenings,” says Glennon. Simple chairs with cozy, bright pillows invite guests to linger; plastic pink flamingos pick up the vibrant color scheme and, as Glennon says, add whimsy.

The Living Room

Energetic pops of coral from accent pillows pep up this living room. The gallery wall, which Glennon says is one of her favorite things about the house, picks up the color scheme while still providing contrast. As a nod to its high traffic location and usage, the ottoman is covered in high-grade vinyl fabric.

Club chairs flank a natural wood table. Glennon used rustic elements throughout the house in order to connect it with the outdoors. Plants strategically dot the room, placed on rustic wood furniture, helping to bring the lush outdoors inside.

The Living Room

A tall, arched ceiling is emphasized by three-quarter length windows that allow plenty of light in and afford a wonderful view of the island surroundings. Storage spaces were built in floor-to-ceiling to maximize every inch. Here in the living room, they’re great spots for stowing books and games for the kids and other guests.

The Living and Dining Room

“The living room and dining room were treated as one space, visually,” says Glennon, who tied the two rooms together with a strong color palette. The large open area is made for entertaining and very light and airy, befitting of its Lowcountry locale. The chairs and sofas have been covered in indoor/outdoor fabric, essential for a home near the water.

The Dining Room

This handsome old dresser was refinished and repurposed into a sideboard that the family relies on when entertaining. The blue and white vintage lamps and brass vases create pleasing symmetry, while a vintage poster picks up the coral thread of the overall color scheme.

The Kitchen

This all-white kitchen uses subway tile to reflect light, making the space feel larger that it actually is. A classic red rug adds warmth to the monochromatic space, which is perfectly balanced with the sleek touches like Carrara marble countertops and simple hardware and cabinetry.

Farm House Sink in Kiawah Kitchen

A large farmhouse sink is both attractive and practical for a high-volume kitchen. The owners make use of what might have been a wasted window ledge by growing fresh herbs to use in cooking.

The Twin Bedroom

A piece of driftwood mounted to the wall works double-duty by adding drama and adding a touch of natural coastal charm. Navy blue twin beds, pillows covered in Lulu DK fabric, and portraiture from a local vintage shop round out this subtly beachy bedroom.

A Nautical Nod in the Twin Bedroom

Nautical knots on the Fine Rugs of Charleston rug, brass accents, and a vintage radio keep the room sophisticated. We love the nautical stripes of the garden stool, which is also a practical consideration for when there might not be enough tabletop space for two.

The Master

The pencil post bed in this tranquil master suite pulls the eye upwards toward the coffered ceiling. A neutral rug, bench, and curtains play nicely against the pale blue walls and accent pillows. Simple nightstands and the clean lines of the bed and bench offer structure juxtaposed with the abstract art, creating a polished look that is both serene and eye-catching.

The King Guestroom

Small end tables provide lots of storage and pick up on the midcentury theme. Pink ginger jar lamps add bursts of color and pick up the feminine hues in the art, king pillow, and antique rug accent pillow.

Layers in the King Guestroom

As Glennon says, “The vintage mirrors and midcentury sideboard set the mood in this bedroom, while an Indian sari adds a Bohemian element.” Layering rugs add texture and play well against the sari.

The Queen Guestroom

Queen Bed in Kiawah Island Guestroom

In this guest room, soft blue and white touches highlight the home’s coastal location. The trim on the pillow shams picks up the gold and white of the artwork above the bed. A rustic antique side table topped with earth-toned accessories completes this pretty vignette.

Decorative Accents in the Queen Guestroom

Campaign Chest in Kiawah Queen Bedroom

A metallic wall sconce and vase pick up the brass hardware of the antique campaign chest at the foot of this bed. The pillow on the simple wooden chair accentuates both the serene blue of the walls and accessories and the gold of the art on the opposite wall.
