The beauty of an old Southern home stands undoubtedly in its rich history, layered walls, and stunning architecture. This beaten-down rental in Charleston may not have looked the part originally – it had chain-link fences, a brightly colored pink-and-green exterior, and dilapidated gingerbread detailing – but designer Mary Mac Wilson brought it back to life. This 1890s Victorian is now a smooth blend of the home's historical character and Mary Mac Wilson's love of contemporary design. The majority of the renovation was done with the purpose of restoring the home's original charm. For instance, in the bathroom, she decided to keep the vintage claw-foot tub. When the drain is left uncorked, the tub doubles as a shower for Mary Mac Wilson and her husband. "I'm sentimental about these old things," she says. "I felt like I needed to use it. Putting it in the shower felt like a fun way to make it mine."
