Bunny Williams, interior designer of the 2015 Southern Living Idea House, shares her tricks for saving money while creating a timeless collection of home decor.
I'm Bunny Williams. I am the interior designer for the 2015 Southern Living Idea House. When someone is starting out with a new home and they're young, they're starting collecting. One of the things that I found that you use over and over again, Are beautiful end tables. Tables that sit next to the sofa. If you have a small house, and you buy a piece of furniture just to fit that space, it may not fit the next house. Or if you decide, I'm going to buy this huge table for the front hall, as your first investment, you have to be sure that it's going to fit where you go. I believe that when you buy the things you really love, that have quality, you don't get rid of them. They stay with you forever. Now they may be in your living room in one house. When you move they may go to a master bedroom or a library. You never get rid of those good things. I feel the same way with art. If you really buy a wonderful painting, it's going to be with you forever. If you love it, you're never gonna want to change it. Curtains are not a good investment. If you plan to move, they are an expensive waste of money on fabric. If you're not living in a place that That you think you're going to live in for a long time. Don't buy expensive custom-made rugs because they may not fit the next house. Keep the rugs simple. Do Sisal. Do something that's not expensive. But put your money into the art, into a good end table, into a beautiful pair of chairs. Things that are a normal size that you'll have forever. And that will become really a part of your collection.
