Inspired by the birth of her daughter Millie, Amy Grant had a hit on her hands twenty-five years ago with the crazy-popular song "Baby, Baby." This year, to celebrate the song's milestone, Grant and fellow recording artist Tori Kelly recorded an update to the iconic tune. In honor of the song's recent release–and with Mother's Day just around the corner–SL sat down to chat with Grant about how she does Mother's Day, one of her favorite recipes, and one of the beautiful ways that she has honored her own mother.

About the song: Grant re-recorded the iconic song, which she wrote with Keith Thomas twenty-five years ago. Her label-mate, Tori Kelly, is incorporated into this new version, making it a multi-generational affair. A fun side note: Grant's daughter Corinna has performed Kelly's songs at talent shows, which "brings the connection full circle," says Grant.

About Mother's Day: Grant recalls making a big lunch one year when her kids were really young, and she decided that from then on, she was going to spend Mother's Day in celebration of being a mother, which meant giving herself permission to do something for herself. An example: one year, Grant just really wanted to go out into the country and be with the kids on Mother's Day, so off they went for a few tranquil hours. Another year, she built a fire in the backyard, "just for me," she says. She loves doing something simple "to celebrate being a mother, and to be grateful for the experience." That same year, her stepdaughter Jenny came out to the yard and for the first time said, "I had to come see you on Mother's Day."

About cooking: Grant is an avid cook and gardener, so we asked her for one of her favorite recipes. She says this is a great thing to serve outdoors on a spring or summer day–maybe make it for your mom this Mother's Day.

BLT Bites

1 Tbps. Durkees Famous Sauce

1 Tbps. lemon Juice

1/4 cup chopped Parsley (fine)

Pinch of Sugar

1/2 lb. Bacon Cooked Crisp and Crumbled

  2. Spread Sauce on Bread – Top with Tomato
  3. Sprinkle small amount of Tony Chachere's Cajun Seasoning
  4. Sprinkle with Parsley all over the tops after you place them on serving platter.
  5. Don't assemble them too early – they will get soggy.
  6. Enjoy

About honoring her mother: In speaking with Grant, and reminiscing over Mother's Days past, she remembers all of the mothers being honored in church on the holiday. As for her own mother, Grant opened up about a memory she has of when her mother was her age now, and she was in her twenties. Her mother asked Grant to write an introduction for her to read at a luncheon. She has since passed away, but the result of the request was the following poem, which Grant was kind enough to share with SL.

Wishing all of the moms out there the very best this Mother's Day.
