Behold: The Ultimate Spooky American Road Trip

From a Tennessee cave that inspired The Blair Witch Project to an abandoned coal mining town in New Mexico, the United States has no shortage of spooky destinations.

With road trips booming amid the coronavirus pandemic and Halloween celebrations up in the air, Kayak has put together a spooky road trip guide to American cemeteries, ghost tours, haunted lighthouses, and more so you can get your fright on from the safety of your car.

"Halloween may look different this year but just because haunted houses are out, doesn't mean you can't treat yourself to a good scare," the guide notes. "This cross-country road trip has thrills and chills to spare."

The spooktacular adventure starts at a haunted inn in Waterbury, Vermont, then zigzags across the U.S. before ending at the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California. The journey includes 29 spooky places across 7,496 miles, which adds up to approximately 133 hours and 40 minutes (or just under six days) of road trip bliss.

St Augustine Lighthouse, St. Augustine, Florida

Over the years, reports have included smelling phantom cigar smoke believed to belong to one of the lighthouse's first keepers, along with the laughter of two sisters who died in the bay.

Bell Witch Cave, Adams, Tennessee

The inspiration for The Blair Witch Project, the Bell Witch is believed to have tormented farmer John Bell and his family in the early 19th century. Tours of the cave and Bell's cabin are available.
