And we've tried, we've really tried, to stick with our New Year's resolutions of cleaner diets for healthier lifestyles. But 2017's newest health trend has been revealed, and we're eager to jump on board.
A term coined by health guru Gwyneth Paltrow, "clean sleeping" is the latest wellness craze of the year. She tells the Daily Mail of the benefits of incorporating up to 10 hours of sleep per night for an overall improved lifestyle. Hitting snooze for better health? Count us in.
Sleeping in is reserved, by most of us, for weekends or holidays—not a regular occurrence. Though the National Sleep Foundation suggests 7-9 hours of sleep per night for most adults, the demands of everyday life make committing to those guidelines much easier said than done (and rarely achieved).
Though it seems obvious, sleep is often overlooked as a crucial element of our mental and physical health. The National Sleep Foundation defines sleep hygiene as "a variety of different practices and habits that are necessary to have a good nighttime sleep quality and full daytime alertness." A commitment to sleep should be just as much a part of a healthy lifestyle as diet and exercise. Quality rest leads to a boost in mood, an increased production level, and more energy for making healthier choices throughout the day.
