Divide Savory Meat Base into 4-cup portions to freeze.

Your family's summer activities are soon to be replaced by back-to-school shopping, soccer practice, and car pools. While you've still got some breathing room, cook and freeze several batches of Savory Meat Base to get a jump-start on weeknight meals. Dolores Long of Abingdon, Virginia, who shared this recipe with us, says she raised all four of her children on it. The spaghetti she makes with it always brings them home for a visit.

Base Basics

  • Ground sirloin, round, or chuck may be substituted for lean ground beef.
  • Cool Savory Meat Base, and place in heavy-duty zip-top plastic bags; remove as much air as possible from bags before sealing. Date and label for easy reference.
  • Individual bags of Savory Meat Base may be refrigerated and used within three days or frozen for two to three months.
