The $10 Costco Item Every New Southern Cook Needs in Her Pantry

When it comes to our food (and everything else, for that matter), the South doesn't shy away from flavor. We're the birthplace of Old Bay (Maryland is part of the South, like it or not), Tabasco (made on Avery Island, Louisiana, for 150 years), and Tony Chachere's Original Creole Seasoning (another Louisiana favorite). We take our seasonings, marinades, and rubs seriously; when it comes to seasoning, quantity is just as important as quality, no bones about it. And the easiest way to insult your Mama (besides forgetting to say "ma'am") is to salt her food before you take a bite. You best believe she made that Hoppin' John the way the good Lord intended—with lots of salt. Of course, as we know, it's often healthier to skip the salt, but we're not about to sacrifice flavor just to go easy on the sodium intake.

But good news! We've recently discovered a no-salt seasoning that's changing the game.

Costco, the land of inexpensive outerwear and $5 rotisserie chicken, is also home to one of our very favorite private labels, Kirkland Signature. From razors to pure vanilla extract, Kirkland Signature makes just about everything you could ever need or want, and we're rarely disappointed. So we have a pretty good feeling about their Organic No-Salt Seasoning, which boasts "a blend of 21 organic spices and ingredients from around the world."

The Costco website recommends using the no-salt seasoning on burgers, steaks, ribs, chicken, and turkey; but we'd imagine the seasoning, which includes garlic, carrot, bay leaves, cayenne pepper, and lemon and orange peels (to name a few), would taste pretty good sprinkled on just about anything. And because it's sodium-free, you can shake, shake, shake with reckless abandon—all the flavor, no guilt.

Plus, it comes in a 14.5-oz. container for just $9.49. Quality and quantity. That's our kind of seasoning.
