If you have ever watched Ree Drummond, aka The Pioneer Woman, create amazing dishes on her cooking show, you can tell she has a plethora of shiny kitchen appliances and gadgets at her disposal. A high-end electric mixer to whip up fabulous layer cakes? Check. A set of top-of-the-line bakeware to promote crispy golden crusts for pies and tarts? Check. Swanky equipment is certainly nice to have, but sometimes it is fun to get back to basics and work with simple tools of the trade; tools like wooden mixing spoons and multi-use tongs that you keep in a crock by the stovetop. In a recent conversation with Southern Living, Drummond was asked to name her three favorite tools in her home kitchen and why she likes them. (And we can bet you depend on these same tools.)

Pizza Cutter

This tool is for so much more than just slicing hot pizzas. Drummond uses a pizza cutter to cut a quesadilla into halves or quarters. You can also cut tortillas into strips to bake or fry. Cube a ham steak or boneless chicken breast using the pizza cutter. You can shred lettuce and chop herbs, cut homemade pastry, and even cut fondant for cake decorating.

Flat Whisk

Drummond favors the flat whisk because it is just that: flat. Pressed against the surface or sides of a skillet or pot, it can get into the edges better than the traditional French whisk. Ideal for deglazing and whisking sauces, this jewel of a tool is also less likely to flip out of the pot or bowl. One more advantage: food doesn't get lodged inside the tines of a flat whisk.

Good Quality Knife

If you have ever struggled to cut vegetables or meat with a cheaply made, dull knife, you know that effort can be more dangerous than using a superior, razor sharp knife. Select knives made of high-quality material that won't rust or corrode; carbon-stainless steel is an ideal choice for the knife blade. Although you can buy a complete set of knives, many cooks prefer to buy knives individually to make sure that each piece fits their hands. The Pioneer Woman favors the Wusthof Nakiri knife.
