Nothing says “deck the halls” or “tis the season” quite like classic Christmas décor. When the air gets cool and they days get short, there’s nothing like pulling out the Christmas decorations to get in the spirit of the season. It’s a look we’ve all come to know and love: a grand Fraser fir tree, holly, bells, green garland, and a tidy magnolia leaf wreath. We’ve gathered some of our favorite ways to achieve this look with traditional Christmas decorations: be it a short commitment, like a striped knit stocking, or something more long term, like bold red walls. Classic and contemporary ornaments mix for a balanced look, and punch graphic wrapping paper refreshes the look. With so much going on this season we know how hard it can be to find the time to pick out the perfect accent. So we’ve done the dirty work: here’s our favorite traditional holiday décor elements.

Classic and Colorful

This living room's bold red walls and traditional architecture call for classic Christmas treatment, complete with a grand Fraser fir and a sweeping tree skirt. Elegant round magnolia wreaths hang in the windows by strips of fabric that match the room's furnishings, and gifts are wrapped to match the red-black-and-white color scheme. A loose arrangement of temple bells and fresh holly top the tree.

Temple Bell Tree-Topper

Bunch fresh holly and large gold bells on top of the tree for a fresh use of traditional materials. Use clear fishing line to secure the loose arrangement to the branches. The holly is easy to find in your yard (or maybe a neighbor’s!).

Round Magnolia Wreath

Magnolia wreaths have a sophisticated look, and they don’t shed messy needles like pine versions. Try hanging your wreath with strips of fabric used elsewhere in your room, or with pretty grosgrain ribbon.

Antique-Style Ottoman

Every room benefits from at least one piece with a sense of history. This bench, a vintage Louis XV-style, got a breath of new life with a fresh coat of paint and new upholstery. Try this version from Wisteria as an ottoman or coffee table.

Striped Knit Stocking

Chunky woolen stockings have an heirloom feel, but colorful stripes or funky patterns give them a modern spin.

Bold Red Walls

Red can be a bit intimidating, but this shade has a richness that keeps it from looking too fire engine. Paint the window trim high gloss white and the moving parts black for added architectural interest.
