The Coziest Winter Nail Colors for January 2022

The Coziest Winter Nail Colors for January 2022

The beginning of a new year often has us all feeling like starting off fresh by taking on better habits, getting rid of old ones, and—most commonly—changing up our look. While others are hitting the squats and going into the salon for a pixie cut, why not start slow and steady with a cozy winter manicure in a color that feels new to you? It takes only a little courage to step outside your usual OPI Lincoln Park After Dark or Essie Bordeaux, which is all you need to kick 2022 off on a fanciful foot.  From new wintry takes on classic dark nail colors to unique pops of color that'll have you feeling the opposite of boring, these are the best nail colors to try this January and tick off all the way into spring.

16 Kitchen Design Trends Southern Designers Predict Will Be Everywhere in 2022

16 Kitchen Design Trends Southern Designers Predict Will Be Everywhere in 2022

There's no denying how the pandemic fundamentally changed the world—including how we live (and work) inside our homes. An overall trend toward celebrating the history and originality of our homes is displacing ultramodern aesthetics and sharp lines as we all look to create cozier, colorful, more personalized spaces that better suit our lifestyles. We're turning away from big-box stores and toward vintage items—first, out of necessity due to supply-chain issues, and now, for design reasons—to add charm and character to every room in the house, including the kitchen. Here, interior designers from around the South share their predictions for what's trending in kitchen design for 2022 and beyond.

Grilled Chicken Cutlets with Strawberry Salsa

Strawberry Salsa
Credit: Photo: Greg DuPree

Recipe: Grilled Chicken Cutlets with Strawberry Salsa

This fresh and light dish will be your go-to supper this season. The chicken cutlets get a big boost of flavor from a marinade of pineapple juice, ground ancho chile, cumin, vinegar, and oil. Be sure to allow enough time for the chicken to chill in the marinade for 30 minutes before grilling. You'll probably want to make an extra batch of our strawberry salsa to serve alongside. We also love to drizzle Tangy Strawberry Barbecue Sauce over the chicken.

Recipe: Strawberry Salad with Warm Goat Cheese Croutons

To prepare the goat cheese croutons, cut a goat cheese log into rounds. Press each round to 1/2-inch thickness on a baking sheet and freeze for 20 minutes. this process will help the rounds keep their shape and not ooze out of their breading while frying. Serve the salad with Strawberry-Poppy Seed Vinaigrette.

Strawberry Biscuits

Strawberry Biscuits
Credit: Photo: Greg Dupree

Recipe: Strawberry Biscuits

The Southern staple is given a fruity update with the addition of chopped, fresh strawberries. To ensure the butter doesn't get too soft when forming the dough, we like to freeze it before grating with the large holes of a box grater. Add the rest of the dry ingredients and chill in the freezer for 10 minutes. Be sure to mix up Basil-Honey Butter to serve alongside. These biscuits are sweet enough to serve for breakfast, brunch, or even dessert.

A tender stir-and-bake muffin batter replaces the thinly rolled piecrust of more conventional cobblers. The secret to this cake-like cobbler is in the timing: Spooning the muffin batter over a piping-hot filling ensures the underside of the crust cooks as quickly and evenly as the top.

        Salted Caramel Strawberries

        Recipe: Salted Caramel Strawberries

A quick dip in luscious caramel and a salty roll in finely chopped nuts turns fresh strawberries into a gourmet treat. Top picks: A ripe berry will have a shiny, deep red color from the tip of the berry to beneath the green cap. Check the carton from top to bottom for any damaged or moldy fruit—they’ll cause the others to deteriorate quickly.
