Oyster-Inspired Dockside Party
In the south, most everyone looks forward to fall--not only for the cooler temps and college football, but also for oyster season! So today I'm offering five things to consider when hosting an oyster-inspired party. As a Southern lifestyle blogger, my goal was to create an over-the-top tablescape inspired by the lowcountry views of the Golden Isles.
Location, Location, Location. We took advantage of the Black Banks River views and set up a farmhouse table with white-washed bamboo chairs on our friend's dock on Sea Island, Georgia. The paper table runner, which was a maritime map of the Golden Isles, perfectly highlighted the marsh landscape surrounding us. It was inspired by Gunners Daughter's luxe leather handbags which use the Golden Isles map as a silk liner.
Oyster Necessities. For any oyster party, you'll want to ensure that you have all the necessities for your guests, including fresh oysters, an oyster knife for shucking, sauces, crackers, and lemons. It all starts with fresh and sustainably sourced oysters. We turned to a reliable + local company, Mainely Lobster and Seafood, for our oysters. And almost just as important as the oysters themselves are the oyster knives and chainmail shuck guards. Shucking oysters can get messy + slippery -- so having a shuck guard and an heirloom quality knife makes all the difference (it's also a great gift)! This specific oyster knife design was inspired by Georgia's gently winding Black Banks River, which set the ambiance for our dockside party. It doesn't get any more local than that!
Special Touches. In addition, we partnered with the Vine Garden Market to plant herbs in their custom crafted oyster shell containers, which were inspired by the Georgia coast. We set out clippers and a chalkboard sign, with beautiful calligraphy by Kara Anne Paper, to encourage guests to snip fresh herbs to garnish their own oysters and cocktails. It's always a great idea to direct your guests through watercolor name cards or drink menus. I'd definitely recommend sticking with one calligrapher for all of your signage to maintain a consistent look -- luckily for us, Kara Anne Paper provided the perfect touch! We also translated the coastal theme across the tablescape by using knotted oyster napkin rings and everyday oatmeal linen napkins, handmade by Dot and Army in the Golden Isles. The best thing about the napkins is that they're made for everyday use.
Dessert. We wanted to offer our guests a special treat, so we partnered with Minette Rushing Custom Cakes, who designed mini lemon cake pops! These yummy lemon-flavored pops were the perfect pairing for the briny oysters. On top of that, they're pretty darn cute if you ask me!
Attire. Since oyster roasts are a true southern tradition, it was a no-brainer to partner with Reese Witherspoon's Clothing Line Draper James. I love all of their new fall arrivals, especially this classic fringe denim skirt and silk floral button down top. The denim wraps skirts is a fabulous choice for a casual oyster roast, and a flowy top is an optimal fit for breezy evenings. Just pair this outfit with mint and lemon infused tea, and Reese's monogrammed cocktail napkin, and you're all set!
