Impress your guests with a proper table setting.
Hi, I'm Kimberly Schlegel Whitman, editor at large at Southern Living. There is a graciousness in southern entertaining that I just adore. Ev, every detail is thought through, from the table setting to the way your greeted at the door and I just think it's so special. And one of the things I love about setting a Southern table is the fun that you can have by mixing the old with the new. So taking maybe your grandmother's China and mixing it with a very modern centerpiece is a real fabulous Southern tradition and a Southern way to celebrate any milestone occasion. When your entertaining in Southern Style, you really wanna put an emphasis on setting the perfect southern table. And, one of the things you have to take into consideration, is appealing to all five senses of your guests, so instead of just thinking about what they'll be seeing at the table, you have to think of all of the elements. You want them of course to see beautiful things, pull out your special China. Your special silver anything that you have that will make the table setting seem unique and beautiful. And really give it a gracious element. But of course you also want to appeal to what they're gonna be smelling. And you want beautiful aroma from food, from flowers, and from all of the things around, maybe candles if it's at night. You also want to make sure that they're hearing great sounds, so Whether it's the birds chirping, or a waterfall, or maybe it's a great playlist on your ipod. Fantastic southern tunes. Gonna make sure that they're hearing great things as well. Make sure that you put out your fine linens for your guests to touch. You wanna make sure when they pull that napkin off the table that they feel the luxury and, and the love that you put into preparing that napkin for them. You also want to make sure that they're tasting great southern cuisine. Make sure you add the ingredient of love in to all your southern dishes and that's what sets them apart from any other dish.
