Practically every closet from Memphis to Tuscaloosa to Palm Beach has one thing in common—they all have a button-down shirt in them somewhere. These tailored shirts are a staple with their clean lines and classic menswear-inspired style, but like with many once-beloved items that have been around for years, we may have started to take them for granted. Well, no more. If it's not already in regular rotation in your wardrobe, you may want to dig that tailored button-front shirt out of your closet, because the classic look is having a moment.

While some would argue that the button-down shirt has never gone out of style, the look is experiencing a resurgence among fashion insiders, thanks in part to princess-to-be Meghan Markel. The actress-turned-royal has been photographed pairing some well-loved jeans with a prim and proper button-down shirt and thanks to the elevating elegance of a good button-down, she looks downright sophisticated. The combination of high-low fashion transforms the style from something you'd wear to your own couch to an easy-going fashion statement and if the look is good enough for her to wear to the Invictus Games with Prince Harry, it's certainly sufficient for a trip to Harris Teeter. (Of course, having a Prince on her arm doesn't hurt either, but not all of us are privy to that particular accessory.)

As fashionistas—and fashionistas in training—know, the button-down shirt is an easy way to elevate a laidback look into a chic ensemble, which is why it has been a staple for so many years. Markle's fellow royals like Kate Middleton and Grace Kelly (a.k.a. Princess Grace of Monaco) have been spotted wearing the crisp, clean lines of a button-down shirt. Celebrities like Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and Nancy Reagan have frequently opted for the elegant ease of a button-down shirt, and actress Sharon Stone made headlines when she paired a lilac Vera Wang satin skirt with a button-down Gap shirt on the red carpet of the Oscars.

To incorporate the shirts into your wardrobe, simply dig it out of your closet (or grab one of your husband's) and then pair it with jeans like Markle or with an evening skirt like Sharon Stone or find a comfortable in-between look. When it comes to button-down shirts, you can't go wrong.
