“I like pink. Pink is my signature color,” Shelby says matter-of-factly in Steel Magnolias. We can relate.

While some say it’s too girly, and some say it’s too juvenile, we say that pink is for everyone—whether you prefer barely-there baby or ultra-bright bubblegum, and whether you consider yourself trendy or timeless.

There’s a reason Southern girls—and British royalty—always reach for “Ballet Slippers” pink, after all. It’s classic, understated, and flattering on all skin tones. It really is the universal signature color.

But as soon as summer hits the South, we’re ready to try nail polish colors with a bit more fire in the belly. Bright corals, seaside blues, and sunkissed yellows—these are the fun-loving colors one should wear during the summertime. Luckily there’s already a fresh hot pink on the horizon to try this season, and it's inspired by something Southerners can't get enough of.

If you’re only going to try one new nail color this summer, let's make it watermelon pink. (See you in September, Ballet Slippers.)

Fresh and bright, this shade perfectly captures summer in the South in a bottle. Forget the watery stuff you see in the grocery store, and imagine the rich and robust reddish pink you’ll only find at the farm stand. That's the goal.

While we typically prefer our watermelon on a plate or in a margarita, we’re not against letting our nails follow suit with a shade that looks like a perfectly ripened slice of 'melon.

For an opaque reddish finish, we're loving  Chanel Le Vernis in “Shantug” or Zoya Nail Polish in “Maxine.” For a brighter pinkish color, try Smith & Cult Nail Color in “Suburban Warrior.”

If you’re not afraid to go all-out, pick a shade of watermelon hot pink that will catch everyone’s eye. Essie’s Glazed Days collection comes complete with polishes featuring a candy glaze finish—like a glossy, pink Lip Smackers from the 90s. But without all the teen angst.

Remember: Next time you find yourself at the nail salon, put down the bottle of your go-to nude—because watermelon pink is so much more fun.
