It’s summer y’all, which means our hair is about to be under attack by Mother Nature. From the wall of humidity that smacks you as soon as you step outside to daily afternoon thunderstorms, the weather down South is out to ruin our good hair days one heat wave at a time. The biggest complaint we have when the temps rise is that our pretty manes can go from fresh to frizzy in a matter of minutes. While a good styling product helps, it’s important to know exactly what causes strands to pouf out. Below are seven sneaky things that’ll wreak havoc on our dos over the next few months — plus, expert-approved advice about minimizing frizz and flyaways.

Frizz Factor #1: Picking The Wrong Shampoo and Conditioner

Don’t aimlessly grab the prettiest-looking bottles next trip down the beauty aisle. Instead, it’s important to choose a shampoo and conditioner based on your hair’s biggest needs. “They might be drying your hair because it’s just not the right fit,” explains Suave celeb stylist Jenny Cho. This is especially the case if you have super curly hair. “The cuticle layers are formed differently which can be naturally frizzier than that of straight hair,” she furthers. “Look for products that are made for curly or wavy hair or look for moisture or hydrating or repair in the title like Suave Professionals Repairing Coconut + Vanilla shampoo and conditioner.”

Frizz Factor #2: Friction

While summer hats and scarves may look trendy, proceed with caution if you want extra sleek strands. “As necessary — and cute — as they are, the constant friction of the hair with the fabric will cause frizz,” says Suave celeb stylist Marcus Francis. He also recommends switching to a silk pillowcase. Another one of his tricks? “Try sleeping in a low, loose braid (or loosely twisted top knot) to keep hair contained and not rubbing back and forth against your pillow.”

Frizz Factor #3: Playing With Your Hair

It’s normal to adjust your hair from time to time throughout the day, but if you can’t stop touching it, it may do more harm than good. “Overdoing it will cause smoother strands to frizz up,” explains Francis, so keep your hands to yourself.

Frizz Factor #4: Hard Water

“It can lead to frizz because of the excess mineral build up,” says Cho. If possible, try getting a showerhead that’s designed to filter out all the bad minerals like this one. It’s also a good idea (hard water or not) to do a weekly deep conditioning treatment to keep your locks moisturized.

Frizz Factor #5: Too Much Hairspray

Every Southerner loves her hairspray, but just like mama told us: Moderation is key. “A hairspray with a lot of hold tends to have a lot of alcohol in it, which can dry out strands, leading to frizz,” says Francis. Opt for an alcohol-free alternative or avoid being too heavy-handed with your favorite strong-hold formula.

Frizz Factor #6: Dehydration

If you haven’t noticed, things that dry out hair (like hairspray or hard water) are major culprits for frizz, so generally speaking, a hydrated mane equals a frizz-free summer. This is especially the case if you have color-treated hair. According to Cho, a good way to keep moisturized is by using a leave-in conditioner and embracing air-drying: “Summer is the best time to let the hair dry without using heat tools,” she says. Another good habit? During vacation, always use a product designed to protect against the damaging effects from the sun and chlorine.

Frizz Factor #7: Using An Old Hairbrush

“If you’re still blowing out your hair with a brush that has worn down bristles, there’s a good chance it’s causing your frizz,” says Francis. “It doesn’t fill get the tension the hair needs when you’re attempting to dry it straight, so the cuticle is never really opened and smoothed down, making it prone to frizz back up.” Francis also suggests using the cool button once you’re finished blow-drying. The chillier air helps seal the cuticle and keeps hair frizz-free, longer.
