As far as hair accessories go, they don’t get more nostalgic than a good old-fashioned ribbon bow. After decades relegated to cheerleading squads and costume parties, we are thrilled to announce that the bow is once again entering the mainstream, and boy does it look good!

Simultaneously flirty and sweet, we’ve been seeing this ultra-feminine accessory pop up all over the place—from runways and red carpets to the grocery store in town. Just last week our favorite Duchess and yours was spotted with a chic black velvet ribbon tying back her bouncy curls. Needless to say, fashion experts are predicting they’ll be a full-fledged trend this fall.

Not only do ribbon bows remind us of our childhoods, but they’re the perfect fuss-free way to glam up a basic ponytail. And they’re super easy to DIY. Simply pick out the best ribbon to go with your ensemble, and with a few quick flourishes, you’ve got a flawless bow.

"Ribbons are making a comeback because they're such an easy way of updating your ponytail," celebrity hairstylist Lacy Redway told Glamour. She recommends black bows to avoid looking too childish. "Black is a chic color,” she explains. “It signifies strength, which is so important right now, but it's also still very feminine."

Hooray!
