The Homemade Mask That Will Save Your Hair
And it's only two ingredients
In case you missed it, hair masks are everywhere, and for good reason. These potent cocktails can transform dull strands, take frizz-prone tangles to glossy waves, and even help repair decades of damage. Walk into any grocery store, super store, or beauty counter and you'll find plenty of hair mask options to choose from with prices ranging from $10 to more than $50. Mixing up your own version at home, though, is much easier—and cost-effective—than you might think and only requires two ingredients: honey and coconut oil.
Honey has long been lauded as a cure all for whatever ails you. Local honey is used to help relieve seasonal allergies, a little bear-shaped bottle is the not-so-secret RX for soothing sore throats, and the beauty industry has been prizing raw honey for its moisturizing properties for years. More specifically, when honey is used in hair products it's typically intended to hydrate dry strands and lock in moisture. Coconut oil is another one of those natural remedies that make it a star ingredient both in and out of the kitchen. Here, it's used to soothe frazzled hair and restore luster and shine.

To create the mask, mix one part honey with two parts coconut oil. The amount of product you need will depend on your hair length and thickness, but a tablespoon of honey and two tablespoons coconut oil is a pretty good starting point. If you find the consistency is difficult to work with, microwave it for 5 to 10 seconds. Apply the mixture to damp hair starting at roots and paying particular attention the ends, which are most in need of some TLC. Let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes. To remove, wash hair with your regular shampoo and conditioner. Try to take the time once a week to treat your hair with this hair mask. After just a few uses you should see a noticeable difference in your hair's luster, shine, and manageability—all that without dropping $40 on a 5 oz. tub. Now, that's a bargain.
