Feminine, simple, and colorful is how Hilary Rose Elrod describes her Southern style. The Georgia-born University of Texas at Austin grad has been blogging from Austin since 2015, and she's as comfortable in a dress as she is in jeans. Her mom inspires her outfit choices, and her grandmother's jewels are her favorite accessories. When she's not sharing style tips on her blog (By, Hilary Rose) or looks on Instagram (@byhilaryrose), she loves playing with her pup Patsy, named after Patsy Cline.

My Outfit

"Casual and practical" is how I describe my everyday look. I trust my mom's judgment; she even helped me pick out this outfit. She reminds me to select something that I'm naturally comfortable wearing and will also feel confident in. That's why jeans have always been my go-to staple.

  • Jeans: Similar option for $135; madewell.com
  • Sweater: on sale $79.99; anntaylor.com
  • Crossbody Bag: in Chestnut $298; dooney.com
  • Shoes: in Camel $328; thefryecompany.com
  • Watch: "This watch belonged to my grandmother. Heirloom jewelry always keeps me connected to the people I love the most."

My Childhood Style Icon: Audrey Hepburn

Growing up, I always wanted to be as elegant as Sabrina Fairchild or as fabulous as Holly Golightly, and I always tried my best to emulate them. I remember wearing a fitted black midi dress with a bow belt and pointy-toe kitten heel pumps to a winter wedding when I was 15 and thinking how amazingly Breakfast at Tiffany's I felt.

My Style Icons Now

My look tends to vary a lot, so I have two fashion icons at the moment: Kate Middleton for her classic, elegant, timeless style and blogger Julia Engel for her effortless, airy Southern look.

Best Style Advice I've Ever Received

My mom always tells me how important it is to look appropriate for every occasion. It's always in the back of my mind when I'm choosing what to wear for anything. She says that being comfortable in your own skin is essential, and that starts with being properly dressed for whatever you're doing, wherever you're going, and whomever you may encounter. Dressing appropriately is also a form of good manners.

The One Item I Could Never Live Without

My Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick. I don't think a makeup look can ever be complete without lip color, and this is by far my favorite brand. It stays on all day without smudging. (Plus, they don't test on animals.)

The One Style Rule I Always Break

No white shoes before Easter. I start wearing them in February as soon as it's warm enough for dresses.

Local Influence

Austin is known for its casual, cool vibe, so I find myself going outside my comfort zone to try some edgier pieces. My overall style is very feminine, but because Austin is The Live Music Capital of the World, I also have a variety of fun concert looks in my closet for those occasions.
