The One Reason You Should Never Use Waterproof Mascara
We get it. It has its appeal.
Hot, humid summer days can leave makeup sliding down our faces like a layer cake that was iced too soon. Working with, rather than against, the elements is oftentimes called for. We'll embrace the dewy look by retiring our foundation for the summer in favor of tinted moisturizer. We'll let our hair air dry instead of trying to blow out every last bit of frizz. And there's no need for blush and bronzer during a heat wave (read: everyday from May 1 to October 31). One step outside and we've got a natural flush—no brushes, powders, or creams needed.
There is a certain beauty staple that a Southern woman can't get by without—mascara. You've probably been tempted to pop into your drugstore and pick up the basic waterproof version to get you through to the first cool front but, you might want to think again.
The problem with most waterproof mascaras is they will not budge. If you're thinking, we'll, that's the whole point, right? The answer is both yes and no. Yes, mascara that stays put is ideal, but mascara that requires some serious scrubbing to get off will do more harm than good.
Imagine what all that rubbing can do to the sensitive skin around your eyes. We've all heard it from our moms and grandmothers for years, but treating our face (and, in particular our eye-area) with kid gloves is crucial to preventing more lines and wrinkles. So, if you can't get that waterproof mascara off without some serious scrubbing, you should probably stick with the washable stuff. Or, if the thought of a smudge is a risk you're not will to take, try a version that washes off with warm water like Blinc's Mascara Amplified.
