No smudges here.
To me, liquid liner is makeup equivalent of a little black dress: It’s a classic look, flattering on everyone, and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Since I was allowed to wear makeup, I’ve always kept a tube of jet black eyeliner on hand, and by now, a cat-eye is my signature beauty look. Much like the numerous LBDs in my closet, I always have multiple liquid liners in my makeup bag, and there’s never a formula I’m not willing to try out. However, there are a few brands I go back to again and again — one of those brands happens to be Kat Von D Beauty.
I was first introduced to her Tattoo Liner by another beauty editor early on in my career. We were talking about our favorite liquid formulas, and she swore by it. Not long after that conversation, I became a believer of its inky, long-lasting pigment too (and apparently it can even last through a car crash). So, when I heard Kat Von D Beauty was launching three new liquid liners this summer, I was eager to get my hands on them to see if they were as good as the original. I was especially eager to check out the Lash Liner ($20, sephora.com) that’s formulated for your waterlines.

Any eyeliner enthusiast knows the struggle of getting her liner to stay put on the inners rims. I can’t even count the number of times my eyeliner has magically disappeared from my waterlines less than an hour after application, occasionally resulting in those not-so-cute eye makeup boogers floating around my eyeball. The Lash Liner was created to prevent this makeup mishap from happening. Its formula is a hybrid fluid gel that’s clay binding ingredients are designed to glide onto your waterlines and stay there. Needless to say, I was excited to give it go.
The applicator’s soft tip wand gives you more control while applying, so all I had to do was dip it into the formula then tap its tip along my lower rims. Within seconds, my bottom waterline was coated with the jet-black color I’ve come to expect from Kat Von D Beauty. Then it was time to line my upper, inner rims (the one place on my eye I still haven’t mastered after all these years — I mean seriously, don’t you feel like you’re stabbing your eye anytime you try to apply liner underneath your top lashes?). I gently pulled up my top lid and dabbed on the liner.
By the time my eyeliner look was complete, I was impressed — my waterlines were perfectly defined. The real test was to see if my makeup would still look this good at the end of the night. Twelve hours later — after brunch, errands, and a birthday party — I took a look in the mirror. It was a makeup miracle: My rims looked as good as they did before I left the house, proving that when it comes to liquid liner, it’s hard to beat Kat Von D Beauty.
