We Tried 6 Popular Deodorant Brands–And These Are Our Favorites
BEST OVERALL: Suave 24 Hour Protection
BUY IT: $3.62; amazon.com
Everyone, meet the underdog. Underdog, meet your newest fan.
This deodorant is the least expensive of the bunch, coming in at under $5 per stick. If you're someone who assumes a more expensive product is better, this is the deodorant that you should give a chance to. My only complaint with this product is that you have to be very cautious to avoid white marks. On all other fronts, though, multiple editors picked this (in various scents) as their winner. The Suave scents aren't too overpowering, and won't cover the smell of your perfume, but they're silently working in the background to keep you clean and dry. It was still at about 80% functionality after my workout, and I didn't feel the need to add another swipe when I got home. It was definitely my top pick.
BEST NATURAL: Schmidt's Natural Deodorant
BUY IT: $22.95 per pack of two;amazon.com
The Coconut-Pineapple scent from Schmidt's Naturals comes from their Sensitive Skin Formula line, and boy was this exactly what my tired armpits needed. This deodorant is definitely a little thicker – sticky, almost – but it smelled wonderful. I still had a hint of pineapple after the work day. After a workout, however, the deodorant had lost its smell completely. I didn't smell badly, but I definitely felt the need to reapply to finish the day. For a natural deodorant, though, I was really impressed with this newcomer. It didn't make my sensitive skin itch, and I made it through the day without any deodorant marks on my clothes.
EASIEST TO USE: Dove Invisible Dry Spray
BUY IT: $6.20; amazon.com
The biggest reaction to this deodorant was that, after the initial spray, we didn't feel like we had anything on. On the positive side, it was a very light product. On the opposite side, we didn't know if we were going to need to reapply in an hour. Twelve hours in, however, the spray was still going strong. This spray is light and airy, with no clumping and no looming white marks. I do feel like you'd probably use up this product more quickly because you're not sure how much to use, but it is a nice, subtle scent and holds up at about 7/10 when it comes to working out. One of our editors said that it's a product she'd keep in her bag in case she needed a quick, mid-day freshening up.
BEST SCENT: Kopari Coconut Oil Deodorant
BUY IT: $14; amazon.com
My sister swears by this deodorant, and now I know why. The coconut oil smells amazing – the best scent of the bunch – and it is a smooth, clear stick that glides on easily. It lasted throughout the work day pretty well, but fell a little flat against a workout routine in 90-degree weather. After reapplying, though, the deodorant was fine to get me through the rest of the day. If you aren't planning on running outside, I'd say this is a great pick for a natural product that gave decent coverage and smells like a day at the beach.
LEAST STREAKS: Dove Advanced Care
BUY IT: $3.29;amazon.com
This is the deodorant I had been using previously, but my biggest hurdle with the product has always, always been the white marks that end up on my black shirts. However, the Dove Advanced Care line recently came out with a "no marks on 100 colors" claim that really piqued my interest. So far, y'all, so good. I haven't had any white marks, despite the fact that this is a solid stick of deodorant. I did get a little clumping under my arms toward the end of the day, however, and I could smell it struggling in the middle of my workout. After reapplying, though, a second coat got me through the rest of the night.
MOST PORTABLE: Kiehl's Superbly Efficient Antiperspirant & Deodorant Cream
BUY IT: $21; nordstrom.com
Unlike the other deodorant sticks I tried, the Kiehl's deodorant comes in a tube as a cream, so it'd be perfect to throw in your bag. Squeeze a little cream (it resembles sunscreen), and then rub the product under your arms. It's a very interesting concept. This product does not have a strong scent at all, so it'd be good for those who aren't looking for any kind of smell. It dries pretty quickly, but it took the biggest hit against heat and sweat – I had to reapply a few times in that one day.
