3 Beauty Products to Scrimp On (and 2 to Splurge On)
Find out where to scrimp and where to splurge so that you get a flawless finish every time—and smart savings too. One rule of thumb is to spend more on what you use every day, as opposed to that bold lipstick that you wear less frequently. However, there are some exceptions and, thanks to innovations in some of our favorite affordable makeup ranges, we’re actually excited about scrimping on a few key products this season. (Because the savings will let us splurge on the high-end products we’ve been eyeing.) When the makeup is this good, everyone wins.
Save #1: Mascara
There are so many drugstore mascaras out there, and they do the job just as well as the high-end brands. From volumizing mascaras to lengthening formulas and everything in between, there’s sure to be an affordable mascara that will win you over. We’re partial to L’Oreal mascaras, which offer some of the best long-wearing formulas. The L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Original Mascara has a thickness-building brush to coat every lash, while the L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Million Lashes separates and lifts your lashes for a clean finish.
Save #2: Lip Products
In this case, you don’t have to put your money where your mouth is, because affordable lip products are everywhere—and they are so good. You have to try one of the Revlon Colorburst Lip Balms. This lip product is no longer a well-kept secret, and we’re ok with that. It comes in three different formulas (matte balm, lacquer balm, and balm stain) plus plenty of different colors, so you have finishes for every taste and shades for every mood. Grab the balm stain in Honey for a perfect all-day tint. It’s as stylish for the workday as it is for after hours. And if you’re thinking, “I’ll never find anything to outdo my favorite high end lip products,” just look around. The Sonia Kashuk Velvety Matte Lip Crayons are just as long wearing as the classic NARS lip pencils, but they are a fraction of the price.
Save #3: Makeup Brushes
There’s no need to spend hundreds of dollars on makeup brushes. Thanks to affordable brush brands like EcoTools and Real Techniques, you can build an arsenal of great makeup brushes without breaking the bank. Real Techniques has plenty of affordable, super-soft, easy-to-clean options for eyes and face (plus a makeup sponge that rivals the beloved BeautyBlender). No more applying eye shadow and blush with your fingers—these brushes will change your beauty game and save money for future makeup splurges.
Splurge #1: Foundation
Because of all of the variables—including finishes, textures, and shade-matching—it pays to splurge on your foundation. Once you’ve tried a high-end base, it’s hard to go back to drugstore options. If your foundation wears well throughout the day, it makes a huge difference, and that’s definitely worth the price tag. Try the It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream for a gorgeous, natural finish or the Make Up Forever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Foundation for a full-coverage, undetectable base that comes in 40 shades. Splurging on your skin will work wonders. This goes for skincare, too—moisturizers, serums, cleansers, and creams. Invest in your skin, and it will love you back.
Splurge #2: Bronzer
Drugstore bronzers can be hit-or-miss. When they miss, the undertones and textures aren’t quite right. They’re either too cool or too warm, too chalky or too bold. Thankfully, higher-end bronzers get it just right. They can add the perfect summery glow to your makeup look. Splurging on your bronzer means you’ll be getting a buttery formula in a just-right shade. Try the Too Faced Soleil Matte Bronzer or the NARS Bronzing Powder, which has an oh-so subtle shimmer. (If you absolutely must scrimp on bronzer, try the NYX Matte Bronzer. It comes in three shades with none of the chunky glitter that is so often a symptom of drugstore bronzers.)
