The One and Only Decorating Thing You Need to Do This Fall
Get some mums. Lots of mums.
Nothing signifies fall more than leaves changing. But, it's pretty hard to bring those changing trees inside. Your best bet to imitate that super-fall look is to decorate with mums. The orange, red, and almost purplish varieties are apropos for an autumnal palette. Many may believe that decorating with mums is only for the outdoors, but we disagree completely. Display mums both indoors and outdoors to create a seamless fall look in and around your house. Here are our best new ideas for decorating with mums:
Try New Varieties
While we love the colorful pop of color that the sculptural and densely blossomed button mums, venture out and try a spider mum this year. Like the name suggests, the petals are looser and curve outward but the colors are still firmly autumnal.
Pot them Indoors
Everyone has pots of mums by their front doors, but don't be afraid to be a little different and use them inside too. Give your regular orchid houseplant a break and arrange mums in attractive containers in highly visible places (like the entry table or the kitchen island). Try potting your mums in a complimentary container like an old copper vessel or old white ironstone to dress them up for interior use. Of course, you can always carve out a pumpkin and fill it with mums to make Southern Living's most popular fall decorating idea – the Mumpkin.

Create a Tableau
For a long-lasting centerpiece, pot a few small mum plants in simple containers like terracotta pots or canvas colored pots and scatter them along a burlap runner. Layer in a few attractive branches that still have their leaves attached, small pumpkins, and mix in a few votive candleholders. You may need to replenish your branches a few times during the fall, but the centerpiece should last through the majority of the fall.
