Recipe: Shoo-Fly Punch
You'll find bourbon in almost every Southerner's pantry. We use it (liberally!) to sip on, to bake with, and to celebrate special occasions. We've got award-winning local bourbons all over the South – especially looking at you, Kentucky – that have been aged for years to perfection. So, it's no wonder that when we decide to whip up a batch of cocktails to do a little porch sittin' with friends and neighbors, we love adding in a heavy splash of bourbon. Shoo-Fly Punch is the perfect example of a bourbon-infused summer sipper that beats the heat on sweltering July days. This bright, invigorating cocktail recipe fits in perfectly between bare feet and Southern porch stools. Make a pitcher for your next outdoor gathering and guests will take seconds of this spicy, refreshing sipper. The key to making this cocktail (other than adding bourbon) is the addition of ginger beer. Ginger beer is a non-alcoholic fizzy beverage with a pop of spicy ginger that adds tons of flavor. We used around 1/3 cup in the recipe, but feel free to add the ginger beer to taste, according to how strong you like your cocktails. Grab a few Mason jars, some crushed ice, and some sweet oranges, and you're well on your way to the perfect Southern evening.
