McDonald's Just Debuted 4 New Kinds of Shamrock Shakes
Perhaps the only beverage more synonymous with Saint Patrick's Day than green beer is the McDonald's Shamrock Shake. With spring right around the corner (hopefully), the beloved bright green drink is making its way back to McDonald's restaurants across the country.
This year, the fast food giant announced that the annual limited-time beverage would be returning along with four new hot and cold flavors: chocolate, frappe, hot chocolate, and mocha. Though they all look delicious, the Chocolate Shamrock Shake is without a doubt the star of the new drink lineup. It's a colorful, layered milkshake that pushes the boundaries of conventional shakes.
It's also far too fancy and complex to be enjoyed by any ordinary straw. For the best possible milkshake experience, McDonald's teamed up with two engineering firms to create the Suction Tube for Reverse Axial Withdrawal, a.k.a. The S.T.R.A.W.
"It was a puzzling assignment but one with an ambitious goal," Seth Newburg, principal engineer and managing partner at NK Labs, said in a statement. "From a physics perspective, it's actually quite difficult to deliver a proportional amount of both chocolate and mint flavors with each sip. But that's exactly what we did. It's a marvel of fluid dynamics."
The S.T.R.A.W. will be available in select participating restaurants with the purchase of a Chocolate Shamrock Shake. Unfortunately, due to the S.T.R.A.W.'s unique design, only 2,000 were produced in time for Shamrock season.
