Prepare for a journey to the Emerald City! That’s right: Universal Pictures has announced that the upcoming Wicked movie will be released on December 22, 2021. While casting and production details haven’t yet been announced, the film is aiming for a holiday-season premiere.

The movie is based on the Wicked musical, which opened on Broadway in 2003 and has been running there ever since. Wicked has had many productions in other locations, including the West End, Canada, Australia, Finland, Mexico, and South Korea. It has also had tours in the U.S. and North America as well as the U.K. and Ireland.

The musical, which has music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman, is based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The book tells the origin stories of the witches of Oz, characters created by L. Frank Baum in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz series. The series is a collection of 14 novels that also inspired the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz.

The original Broadway production was nominated for ten Tony Awards and won three: Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Actress in a Musical for star Idina Menzel. It also won a 2005 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album. Menzel starred as Elphaba with Kristin Chenoweth as Galinda/Glinda, Norbert Leo Butz as Fiyero, Joel Grey as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Carole Shelley as Madame Morrible, Michelle Federer as Nessarose, and Christopher Fitzgerald as Boq.

In 2016, Wicked surpassed $1 billion in worldwide revenue. The only other Broadway shows that have reached that mark are The Lion King and The Phantom of the Opera.

Keep an eye out for casting announcements and further Wicked news as the premiere approaches.
