What's easier than walking through dozens of galleries or barging into artist studios? Or do you ever wonder what inspires an artist's painting or what's the point of view that shapes a photograph? An easy way to get behind the scenes and answer both questions is Instagram. Here are a few artists with Southern roots that I enjoy following.

Photographer and Memphis native Catherine Erb captures the vast natural world covering land, earth, and sea. Her current cloud series is so dreamy. She often uses different materials to enhance her work such as copper leaf, encaustic wax, and hand tinting. Follow Catherine.

Memphis raised Jared Small's feed shows the pieces to the puzzle that result in his finished works. The dilapidated buildings trying to maintain former glory, or flowers frozen for a moment in time, or portraits that give a real sense of character, this work commands a response! Follow Jared.

I dare you to find a better looking painting of an animal. You'd think Mississippi native, New Orleans-based Jason was a photographer. No ma'am. His realistic yet painterly subjects from the natural world are so striking. Follow Jason.

All images©Jeannette Montgomery Barron and not for use without permission.

I first saw Jeannette Montgomery Barron's work at Jackson Fine Art in Atlanta when I literally stopped in my tracks to look more closely at a photograph of a red swimsuit. I learned more on her series titled "My Mother's Clothes." I was particularly drawn to the nostalgia I love seeing the interesting compositions she captures through the lens. Follow Jeannette.

You've heard of Ashley Longshore. A favorite of celebs, socialites and business scions alike, she dominates modern pop art in America. You probably don't know her gallery director– Kate Grace Bauer. She finds beauty in everyday life, while managing to harness the zaniness of Longshore's New Orleans studio. Follow Kate.

A graduate student at the University of Alabama, Kelsey embraces the southern landscape with soft and subtle mark making and color tones. You will quickly notice these are not ho-hum landscapes. Her posts feature her love of nature and gardening, which show a clear connection to the work. Follow Kelsey.

Dallas native Mary Nelson lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. As you peruse her feed, it's easy to see where she finds inspiration - from rich interiors to world travels. The end result is a magnificent, layered, abstract rush of color that sits so pretty in any space. Follow Mary Nelson.

Pam is originally from rural Georgia and the imagery she uses is often connected to that. I am drawn to the spiritual and contemplative imagery that creates a feeling of peace and quiet. Ahhh…who doesn't need some peace and quiet? She looks at all things around her as a voice for her work. Follow Pam.

Originally from the Mississippi coast, Stephanie now resides in Houston, TX. Her focus is on the figure and portrait. Her work is like a story woven with symbols and metaphors. I find her work fresh, and I think you will too. Follow Stephanie.

P.S. @art_for_breakfast is a favorite stop on Instagram. Love the title. I say art for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Art on our walls, and every surface! More on collecting next week, all about a mix or stick to a theme?

*Anna Wunderlich is a Memphis-based art consultant. We asked her to advise novice art collectors here on the Daily South. Wunderlich, an artist herself, graduated from College of Charleston studying art and art history. She's also the daughter and granddaughter of two practicing artists Joy Bateman and Joyce Gingold. She's also sister-in-law to Arkansas Delta artist, Betsy Brackin Burch and sister to local Memphis chef, Brown Burch. In short, she's saturated with the creative genes. As a mom of three, she realized that she didn't have the uninterrupted time she desired to work full time in the studio making her own work. (representational imagery in oil and watercolor). Instead, she travels the South and beyond meeting and connecting artists and galleries to a new audience looking to start a meaningful collection.
