Check Out This Year’s Most Over-the-Top Dorm Room
We have showcased quite a few gorgeous rooms (and amazing dorm rooms) here at Southern Living. We appreciate a design well crafted and a room well curated. We appreciate vision. Dawn Thomas and the team at Oxford, Mississippi-based After Five Designs have vision. They can take the bleakest space (think: cinder block-walled, single bed-filled college dorm room) and turn it into an oasis. That’s just what they’ve done with this elegant dorm room at Mississippi State University. There are a few things every dorm room needs, and this one goes above and beyond in terms of pure, timeless style. This blank canvas of a room comes alive with an inspired combination of lush velvets, sparkling metallics, and After Five Designs’ own art and pillows. They've taken a functional space and made it so much fun. (Our dorm rooms didn't look like this, but we sure wish that they did!) The color schemes, textural combinations, and design elements in this room are just spectacular, and of course, they make it a perfect place to wind down from a tough day of classes. Take a look at the photos below—we think that After Five Designs has put together the most gorgeous dorm room of the year, and you can check out their Instagram for even more luxe dorm room inspiration.
Take A Peek Inside
A Dorm Room Oasis to Love
This. Is. It. Pretty textural combinations, soft lighting, and calm colors bring this space to life. Shimmering bedskirts hide the elevated underbed area—a great place for dorm room clothing and shoe storage (because you know those dorm closets are small).
An assortment of pillows that coordinate with the bedding adds coziness. The inclusion of a small love seat between the beds adds extra seating too—which is always a plus when friends drop by. A pair of matching lamps softens the room’s overhead lighting, and sculptural pieces hung over each bed complement the color scheme and add visual interest.
An easy way to add instant style is by mixing unexpected textures. A touch of acrylic in the form of a low table adds shelf space but doesn’t look bulky or cluttered, thanks to the transparent material. The sleek look of the table juxtaposes the fluff of the rug and ottoman (which provides even more seating for visiting friends).
The acrylic table acts as a coffee table in between the parallel beds—and a place for a well-curated selection of coffee table books and objets d’art in front of the loveseat-style sofa. A cozy throw and velvety pillows complete the scene.
Architectural headboards were added to each classic dorm bed. While simple in shade and structure, they infuse the space with an additional touch of elegance, creating height and playing beautifully with the subtle green walls. The parallel lamps continue the theme, complementing the color scheme and, of course, allowing for plenty of late-night studying (it's inevitable). A gold-framed mirror in the center of the space centers the design and helps the room feel more spacious.
After Five Designs’ own artwork and pillows adorn the room, including this atmospheric aqua-and-gold piece by Dawn Thomas of After Five Designs. This bold piece is a large-scale canvas that creates major impact while keeping the design streamlined. The scale also makes the most of the dorm room’s lofty wall space.
