There is less than a month until the start of the college football season. Can you feel the excitement brewing? If you didn't already have football fever, surely this week's news did the trick. The Amway Coaches Pre-Season Poll was released Thursday, August 3, whipping Southern football fans into a frenzy, especially fans from Alabama.

For the third time in five years, The University of Alabama rank number one on the coveted list. According to USA Today, Alabama was picked first by 49 of the 65 coaches polled.

With the new championship system, the poll doesn't have as much statistical weight as it once did in determining the final teams to go to battle for the championship, CNN Sports Anchor Andy Scholes told Southern Living.

"Now it's mostly just a fun thing for fans to have something to talk about," Scholes said.

Nothing wrong with some bragging rights!

However, some may take it more seriously and feel this is not the greatest news for Alabama—especially some superstitious fans. After all, they have held this number one ranking before but it has never led to a number one finish. In fact, The Crimson Tide didn't rank atop this poll any of the four years they won championships under Nick Saban.

Scholes doesn't think many Alabama fans are too worried about this ranking becoming a curse though.

"They've had some unlucky things happen to them like losing to Clemson in the last second last year. But if you ask Alabama fans, I think they'd say they'd rather be number one at the beginning of the year. I think they expect it. I think they'd be more riled up if they were ranked number two," Scholes said.

He also added that he fully expects this to be another great year for the Crimson Tide.

"Until they're beaten you just assume they're going to the national championship game. I fully expect them to be playing in the SEC championship game in Atlanta in December."

The good news doesn't stop there, football fans. In fact three of the top five teams in the poll are Southern schools. So we must also cheer on Florida State and Clemson for their number three and number five rankings. All in all, it's shaping up to be a great season and it's never too soon to start dusting off your tailgating gear!
