It's been a long time coming, but redhead emojis are finally in the works.

Emojipedia reports that redheads are on the agenda at the next Unicode Technical Committee meeting, hosted by Apple next week. The tech giant aims to finally address user frustration regarding the lack of available redheaded options, and to work out the best way to incorporate the gingery icons into future iOS updates.

Possibilities include a new "person with red hair" emoji (which would likely come as a man and a woman), as well as custom hair "tags" which could be applied to any existing emoji, such as the runner, dancer, etc.

Even though redheads account for less than 2% of the population, their lack of emoji representation has always been a serious point of contention among users. Unicode, which governs the available set of emoji characters, has been working hard to create more inclusive emojis—most notably adding 5 additional skin tones to its lexicon in 2015—and recently approved a hijab, gender neutral and breastfeeding emoji.

Emojipedia adds that no formal decision has been made regarding redheads, and the earliest an update could be available is 2018.
