‘The Princess Bride’ Is Being Made Into a New Musical
"As you wish!"
We're about to have even more fun storming the castle because The Princess Bride has its sights set on Broadway.
Disney Theatrical Productions is behind the musical, and the creative team bringing the story to the stage is led by composer and lyricist David Yazbek as well as Bob Martin and Rick Elice, both of whom are writing the book. Yazbeck previously created The Band's Visit, which won 10 Tony Awards in 2018, including the Tony Award for Best Musical.
The story of the The Princess Bride began life as a novel written by William Goldman—the legendary storyteller, novelist, playwright, and screenwriter also responsible for writing the films Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Misery, and All the President's Men, among many others. The novel was published in 1973 and provided the basis for the Rob Reiner-directed movie, which had its premiere in 1987 and has been watched, shared, and quoted unceasingly since its release.
The film begins with a grandfather reading a book to his reluctant grandson (characters played by Peter Falk and Fred Savage, respectively). The story that's unspooled introduces a cast of adventurers, unforgettable characters including Buttercup, Westley, Inigo Montoya, Vizzini, Fezzik, Miracle Max, Prince Humperdinck, and even a dread pirate or two. The film stars Robin Wright, Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, Wallace Shawn, Andre the Giant, Billy Crystal and Chris Sarandon.
