On Wednesday, October 25, the Hallmark Channel is getting doggone fancy.

The feel-good channel will be airing the seventh annual American Humane Hero Dog Awards ceremony and celebrating courageous four-legged heroes. Created in 2010, the event honors our fellow furry friends who have defied the odds and changed lives in their respective communities. This year's gala is no exception and will include a two-hour broadcast featuring seven special canines. Celebrity animal lovers and dog experts across the country voted for each prized pup in seven different categories. The winners will be revealed during the October 25 broadcast. Dog nominees have been placed in the following groupings: military, emerging hero, therapy, service, law enforcement, search and rescue, and guide or hearing.

Rounding out the list of finalists in the emerging hero category is one adorable dog you may already be well acquainted with, thanks to her beautiful bonnets and popular Facebook page. She certainly has won over our hearts here at Southern Living. You know her as the headband-wearing pit bull mix, but to her loving new owners and tail-wagging sibling, Tala, she goes by the name of Abigail.

Abigail inspired us with her heart-wrenching story of her long journey to recovery and her adoption into a loving Florida home. Soon, you'll be able to learn more about how she beat the odds and her preferred paws cause, Dogs on Deployment, when she makes her impressive debut on the red carpet at the televised event. We hope to see Abigail bring home the top award of the night—American Humane's Hero Dog of the year.

"From those who defend our country to those who have overcome heartbreaking abuse, to the special dogs who help us heal, guide us, protect us, and help find the lost, each of our four-legged finalists exemplifies true courage and heroism," said Dr. Ganzert, who resides in North Carolina. "We hope that their stories will inspire people to value our animal friends and to recognize and honor how much they do for us every day."
