A New Series Stars Octavia Spencer as Madam C.J. Walker
The new series is called Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker.
Octavia Spencer will play groundbreaking businesswoman Madam C.J. Walker in a new Netflix limited series entitled Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker. Walker, a entrepreneur of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was a self-made millionaire, philanthropist, and activist.
Walker was born Sarah Breedlove in Delta, Louisiana, in 1867. Upon her death in 1919, she was both the wealthiest self-made African American businesswoman and wealthiest self-made woman in the country. Walker earned her fortune inventing, marketing, and selling a groundbreaking line of hair care products. According to Entertainment Weekly, “Inspired by the book written by Walker’s great great granddaughter A’Lelia Bundles, Self Made offers a glimpse into the life of Walker including how she overcame post-slavery racial and gender bias to become America’s first self-made millionaire.” You can watch the trailer for the new series below.
