Octavia Spencer will play groundbreaking businesswoman Madam C.J. Walker in a new Netflix limited series entitled Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker. Walker, a entrepreneur of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was a self-made millionaire, philanthropist, and activist.

Walker was born Sarah Breedlove in Delta, Louisiana, in 1867. Upon her death in 1919, she was both the wealthiest self-made African American businesswoman and wealthiest self-made woman in the country. Walker earned her fortune inventing, marketing, and selling a groundbreaking line of hair care products. According to Entertainment Weekly, “Inspired by the book written by Walker’s great great granddaughter A’Lelia Bundles, Self Made offers a glimpse into the life of Walker including how she overcame post-slavery racial and gender bias to become America’s first self-made millionaire.” You can watch the trailer for the new series below.

The National Women’s History Museum describes Walker's work, saying, “As her wealth increased, so did her philanthropic and political outreach.” In their entry on Walker’s life, the NWHM says, “Just prior to dying of kidney failure, Walker revised her will, bequeathing two-thirds of future net profits to charity, as well as thousands of dollars to various individuals and schools.”
