Kitchen-sink sandwiches are majestic, aren't they? Towering, dripping, and stuffed with a hodgepodge of delicious ingredients, they're a go-to for busy weeknight dinners and casual weekend lunches alike. So named because they're unruly—so much so that you have to eat them over the kitchen sink—and because they contain everything but the kitchen sink, these sandwiches never go out of style. While some may look fancy, the beauty of the kitchen-sink sandwich is the ease with which it's prepared. The key is to make it as delicious as possible while throwing together what you have on hand—everything, indeed, but the kitchen sink.

Don't be afraid to experiment.

Unexpected combinations often make the best kitchen-sink sandwiches, so go for it. Survey your refrigerator, take a look in the pantry, and get creative. No two kitchen-sink sandwiches are alike. Because of the method of preparation—using what you have, where you are, when you're hungry—each one is a unique experience. It's best to charge forth boldly, because a plain turkey-on-wheat does not a kitchen-sink sandwich make.

Break out the toothpicks for an assist.

It's easy for an ambitious kitchen-sink sandwich to find itself running afoul of gravity. If you're not careful, the layers of meats, vegetables, cheeses, and all the rest can come toppling down before you've positioned yourself over the sink to enjoy them. That's where toothpicks come in handy. They can offer an assist to keep your kitchen-sink sandwich from sliding during transport.

Don't overthink it.

Kitchen-sink sandwiches are borne of necessity. They're the ultimate, always-available quick meal. Don't have any bread? Your kitchen-sink sandwich can be a lettuce wrap. No time? Break out last night's leftovers. Truly, anything goes. Hot? Cold? Vegetarian? Vegan? Your kitchen's the limit. And if you don't absolutely love it, tweak it tomorrow. You never know when you'll stumble upon a masterpiece.

There's just something about a kitchen sink sandwich. You can put anything on it and, more often than not, it's the most delicious thing you've tasted all day (whether or not that's the hunger talking, who can say?).
