4 Things You Need to Know About HGTV's New Southern Couple
Springing off the overwhelming success of Fixer Upper (and the lovable stars of the show, Chip and Joanna Gaines) HGTV is premiering a new show next month, Home Town, that features another adorable Southern couple renovating old homes for new folks settling in their small town. There are seemingly a lot of similarities between Home Town's Erin and Ben Napier and the Gaineses (which you won't hear us complaining about), but the couple has a lovable story, adorable Southern hometown, and style all their own. Here's what you need to know about the Napiers before the first season of Home Town premiers on March 21.
- They're seriously devoted to their hometown
Erin and Ben live in Laurel, Mississippi, a town of about 20,000 people just northeast of Hattiesburg. They're passionate about sharing their love of Laurel—and small town life in general—and hope the work they're doing there will help revitalize and preserve the quaint, historic town.
- They have their own renovated old house—and it's incredible
The Napiers live in a 1925 craftsman style house in Laurel's historic district that Erin says she longingly eyed from the time she was high school. In renovating the historic home, Erin and Ben maintained its original architecture and character, adding a traditional yet casual approach to the design and decor that gives you a good idea about the type of people who live there. And this is what the show will primarily focus on: restoring old homes in a way that honors their history while creating a space that genuinely reflects its present inhabitants. We're guessing you'll see plenty of the inside of their home (and its beautiful, spacious porch) on Home Town, but go ahead and take a tour of it now.
- Their backgrounds aren't in home renovating
Or, not exclusively. Erin has a background in art and graphic design, while Ben is an experienced woodworker, whose work we're sure to see lots of on Home Town. Together with four of their friends, Ben and Erin recently opened Laurel Mercantile Co., a general store in town where they sell unique, Southern-made home goods and products, including Ben's reclaimed wood furniture and crafted goods under the name Scotsman Co.
- They're absolutely adorable
If you follow either Erin or Ben on Instagram, you'll quickly get a sense of how greatly they care for what they do, their town, and most of all, each other. Some other adorable facts: Ben is 6-foot-6. Erin's 5-foot-5. She lovingly calls him Big. (You may not see it, but in any interviews of the couple during the show, Erin will be standing on a box to make up a bit of a difference.) Also, and maybe most inspiring: Erin has been keeping a daily journal about the good things that happen in her life every day since January 1, 2010. She's on entry No. 2,600.
