These FNL lovebirds made it through plot twists, pregnancies, and the Texas heat
Warning: Spoilers ahead.
Coach Eric Taylor and his wife, Tami Taylor, are perhaps one of the best Southern power couples to ever grace our television screens. The stars of Texas-based Friday Night Lights are a golden duo (he's a football coach and she's a counselor-turned-principal) who leads students at the local high school to success, both on and off the field. When they're not inspiring everyone around them with words of wisdom and poignant life advice, the two are demonstrating what it means to love your spouse whole-heartedly. They're funny, they're quirky, and they're totally, completely, in love. In honor of the 10-year anniversary of Friday Night Lights, we decided to pull together some reasons why Coach Taylor and Tami Taylor will forever be our #RelationshipGoals.
1. They're willing to compromise.
As soon as the show starts (literally, in the pilot episode), we hear Tami chanting, "His and her's closets, baby, his and her's closets!" As they're looking for a new house, Tami fervently sticks to her desire of his and her's closets—and Eric makes sure that she gets them.
Did we mention they're incredibly gracious with these compromises?
Eric: "I was gonna help you with those dishes but I somehow got stuck to the couch."
2. They take chaos in stride.
Remember that one time when Coach Taylor brought the entire football team—like, one hundred people—home, and made Tami host a barbecue with virtually no notice? That takes patience, people. And, of course, the red-haired superstar mom made it happen on the fly. As Tami once said, "Barbecues build morale. That's why you have them."
3. She puts his needs above hers, and vice versa.
There are literally hundreds of examples when this is the case between Eric and Tami. First of all, we see Tami sacrificing in her career for Coach Taylor as they've had to move around for various football jobs. Then, as a sweet finish to the show, Eric gives up some high-falutin' college football coaching gigs and follows her to her dream job as Dean of Admissions at a Philadelphia college. Their support is perhaps best summed up in this tear-jerking quote from Tami: "No matter what happens, no matter where you go, no matter what you do, I'm always gonna be behind you. Always and always and always."
4. They always support each other, even when it's a little iffy.
In Season 3, Tami accepts the position as principal of Dillon High—which, depending on which booster mom you ask, may have been a little controversial in the Dillon High community. She worked like crazy to change the school from a "football-first" attitude to one that focused on academics. But, you'd better believe that Eric was supporting his wife every step of the way. Again, another Tami quote that perfectly sums it up:
Tami: "I believe in you with every cell of my being."
5. They know that relationships need nurturing.
Aside from all the adorable back and forths of "you're so cute," the couple has a handful of moments that can only be defined as true love. And, Eric and Tami take great care in making sure that if they're having some issues, they work it out.
Eric: "I am proud of you."
Tami: "I love you."
Eric: "I respect you."
On the other hand, they also know how to tell each other exactly what he/she needs to hear—another important part of nurturing a healthy relationship.
Tami: "There's no weakness in forgiveness."
6. They always keep things interesting.
No matter how long the couple has been together, there are still moments that keep them on their toes. Like, that one time in Season 2 when Eric used his own insecurities to somehow make Tami love him more, if that's even possible.
Tami: "Honey, are you jealous?"
Eric: "No, I'm not jealous. I'm just asking a question."
Tami: "That is adorable that you're jealous."
Eric: "You like that?"
7. They set boundaries.
The two have a way of keeping their chemistry and passion alive and well, but they (or, at least Tami) also know where to draw the line. For instance, when Eric tried to start kissing his wife in Gracie's room, and Tami shut that down quicker than a lightening bolt:
Tami: "Oh, no. This is our daughter's bed. Are you crazy?!"
8. They know each others' weaknesses (and how to exploit them).
Is there anything that gets to Coach Taylor's heart more than his girls? Well, maybe that loss against the South Texas Titans. But, mostly his girls. Tami knows this, too, and subsequently has her daughters work Coach Taylor in her favor.
Tami: "Tell Daddy to think about it."
Eric: "Don't you dare!"
Gracie: "Think about it, Daddy!"
9. They know how to keep it fun.
The best friends know that the key to a strong relationship is some healthy banter, like this conversation that happened in Season 1:
Tami: "Start Saracen."
Eric: "I cannot start Matt Saracen."
Tami: "Then start Voodoo."
Eric: "I don't wanna start Voodoo."
Tami: "Then start me."
Eric: "I would love to start you. I'd love to start you."
10. They never lose their spark.
It's undeniable that Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler had remarkable chemistry, but their characters cemented themselves in the relationship hall of fame when, even up to the very last episode, they were keeping the romance alive. Is there anything cuter than this exchange?
Eric: "Damn, I love you."
Tami: "Damn, I love you too."
Is there any denying that Eric and Tami Taylor are everything we could hope for?
As Coach Taylor once said, "Marriage requires maturity. Marriage requires two people that will listen, really listen to each other. Marriage, most of all, requires compromise."
