This romance is decades in the making and the country singer told us all about it.

Scotty McCreery first won over hearts all across America as he took the grand prize on Season 10 of American Idol. The young country singer from North Carolina was a standout immediately thanks to his distinctive, older-than-his-years, deep vocal tone. McCreery could nail the low notes, and he definitely left a high mark on the music industry. Fox's wildly successful talent show launched McCreery's career, but his talent and his commitment to keeping a classic country sound have propelled him to star status. And, with success also comes the throngs of fans that pack any venue the crooner books—especially female fans.

But sorry ladies, it's official–McCreery is off the market. Although, McCreery and his intended, Gabi Dugal, have been an item for a very long time, as he recently told Southern Living.

"We met our first day of kindergarten class I guess and went through school together the rest of our life. It wasn't until my senior year that I wised up and was like this girl is pretty awesome. I might should try and ask her out. And luckily she said yes," McCreery told us.

It took him long enough. Dugal has an old diary from childhood in which she wistfully doodled "Mrs. Gabi McCreery." This perfect match was decades in the making.

"I knew I was gonna propose for a while. I knew pretty early on she was the one and it was just...when it felt right and when the timing was right for both of us," he added.

McCreery spoke about wanting to give her time to finish school and for them both to be in comfortable places in their individual careers. Dugal is now a pediatric cardiac nurse and with the success of his latest single, "Five More Minutes," it's safe to see that they are both in a great spot for the next chapter in their lives.

As with most grooms to be, McCreery wanted to set a romantic scene and make the moment count. He took Dugal on a hike to their favorite spot in the mountains of North Carolina to pop the question.

"I was very nervous and I did not know what I was going to say. I kept trying to think of it, like I'd be in the shower trying to rehearse something…[I was] just trying to say what's on my heart but not be a cheese ball, while I was doing it," he joked.

Of course, she said yes and McCreery captured the moments immediately after the proposal on camera.

The happy couple is now wedding planning but McCreery told us that the details don't matter "as long as friends and family are there."

We here at Southern Living wish the sweet couple a lifetime of happiness and love. And, we can't wait to see the wedding pictures!
