No-nonsense advice on how to make your home look amazing.

Drew and Jonathan Scott never fail to impress us when they renovate homes on TV. In 2019, the Property Brothers have dazzled us on many HGTV episodes of "Property Brothers: Forever Home" and we’ve gleaned some wonderful home improvement ideas from the duo along the way. Read on for our favorite tips from the Scotts—and grab your paintbrushes.

1. Upgrade your staircase.

In one renovation, Drew and Jonathan Scott were not so pleased to find a dated yellow oak banister when they were creating the dream home for newlyweds. If you don’t want to replace the banister completely (in the television episode, the duo opted for modern black handrails), a new coat of paint should do the trick.

2. Let colors pop against black and white.

A living room doesn’t have to be a swirl of every color under the rainbow. Instead, with black and/or white serving as the backdrop, a few bold accessories in colors like purple or pink can shine. Thanks for the reminder, Drew!

3. Big kitchen? Consider two islands.

Yes, really. As the Property Brothers showed us on TV, not only is it possible, but it can look amazing. Two islands can look great in larger kitchens and anchor the space. “We were definitely not into the idea at first—we thought it would look like aisles at the supermarket—but by the time we finished, we were smitten,” the Scott brothers said of the surprising renovation move on their website.

4. Small kitchen? Use light wooden flooring.

If you want to make your tiny kitchen appear bigger, look down to the floor. The Property Brothers believe that incorporating light wooden flooring into your kitchen can help make a space appear roomier than it is. Also, blond or light wood looks wonderful in many types of home and gives you extra freedom to get creative with how you accessorize the space.

5. Transform your bathroom into a total oasis.

If you’re doing a bathroom renovation, you’d be wise to follow this advice from the Property Brothers: “If you want to turn your bathroom into a spa-like sanctuary! Achieve the look in 3 simple steps: blend in natural finishes, declutter, and incorporate GREAT lighting.”

6. Skip the wall-to-wall mirrors.

Like that yellow oak banister of yesteryear, Drew and Jonathan think this look makes a space look passé. Instead of wall-to-wall mirrors, go for a framed mirror in lieu of a piece of art as a focal point in your living or dining room.

7. Don’t paint your walls red or yellow.

We repeat: If you paint your walls red or yellow, the Property Brothers will likely not be fans. In fact, doing so can even negatively impact your home’s resale value so be sure to give any room with these paint colors a new coat of paint if you’re putting your house up for sale.

8. Patterns are your friends.

We often shy away from adding patterns into our homes, especially multiple designs in one room. In reality though, incorporating more than one pattern into a given area can look incredible, as is the case above with a geometric statement wall and a patterned rug.

9. Go colorful with your kitchen backsplash.

A backsplash in your kitchen is the perfect opportunity to show some personality without being too overwhelming to the eye. Drew and Jonathan love this strategy, especially behind the range. In one episode of Property Brothers: Forever Home, they went with a blue, yellow, and white tile design for the backsplash that makes an eye-catching impression. Don’t be afraid to go big.

10. Use shiplap on the ceiling.

Perhaps the Property Brothers were channeling their inner Chip and Joanna Gaines here, but we think they are onto something. By using shiplap on your ceiling, any room in your house can get an inviting farmhouse feel. Bonus: It’s a great way to make use of extra shiplap if you have it lying around from another design project.
