Despite decades in the spotlight, Dolly Parton has somehow managed to maintain a legendary privacy around her personal life. In fact, her husband of 51 years, Carl Dean, is seen so rarely in public that many have wondered whether or not he actually exists. Well, he certainly does, and according to the "9 to 5" singer, it's Dean's aversion to fame that's helped sustained their marriage through five turbulent decades.

"My husband is not one who wants to be just thrown out there," Parton explained in an interview with Vogue last year. "He's very private, and I've always respected that for him and about him. And so, we just try to live our lives. Everybody is not entitled to every single thing you do and thought you think, although I do share as much of my life as I possibly can. I'm not holding back any information, but there are just some things that are sacred and private."

As for whether or not she thinks that privacy has helped her and her husband stay married for so long, Parton responded, "I do think that's had a lot to do with it. If we had fallen victim to every tabloid story and all that—we just try to find the humor in it."

In an age of rampant over-sharing, perhaps we all could learn a thing or two from the iconic songstress.
