This is How Your Favorite Southerners Dressed Up for Prom
You might not be the only one who cringes when looking back at old high school photos. Before our favorite celebrities graced the red carpet, wearing glamorous gowns, designer suits, and flawless makeup, they each went through the same awkward rite of passage that so many of us did as teenagers: prom and the homecoming dance. Which means they, too, all posed in front of the same cheesy backdrops, with stiff hand placement and even stiffer hair. Now that prom season is officially wrapping up, we decided to revisit the puffy shoulder dresses, stacked bracelets, fried curls, and embarassing haircuts that plagued us all in the olden days. For this particular occasion, meant to be remembered forever, it just might be one these Southern A-listers desperately want to forget. Luckily, we have the Internet to thank for a glimpse at what Faith Hill, Shania Twain, Matthew McConaughey, George Clooney, and more looked like, while dancing the night away.
Matthew McConaughey, 1980s
If we’re being totally honest, not much has changed for the handsome Texan. The award-winning actor looked more than “alright, alright, alright” at his prom.
Faith Hill, 1983
Back then, during her freshman homecoming, she was known as Audrey Perry. Thankfully, the Faith Hill we all know and love today, has traded in the overwhelming corsage for more understated accessories.
Jennifer Nettles, 1993
We’re sure the Sugarland frontwoman and Broadway star was just as dazzling during her senior year at Coffee High School in Georgia, just like she is today on stage.
Carrie Underwood, 2001
Judging by her senior prom photo, Carrie Underwood has always been destined for stardom, even before winning American Idol and becoming one of country music's powerhouse vocalists.
Sandra Bullock, 1982
Before she charmed her way into our Southern hearts as tough-as-nails Leigh Anne Tuohy in The Blind Side, the Oscar-winning actress and Arlington, Virginia, native wore some interesting braids and ribbons, while dancing her senior night away with homecoming date.
Taylor Swift, circa 2005
Even though she only attended high school for two years, the country kid turned pop star managed to make an appearance at prom in this strapless, flirty dress. She looks pretty happy here, but we're betting there's a song about this ex-boyfriend somewhere in her catalog.
Julia Roberts, circa 1980s
Ah, Julia was always a pretty woman, from that big hair to her signature big smile. And almost three decades later, the Steel Magnolias favorite is still being honored as the World’s Most Beautiful Woman.
She may not have been crowned queen at then-boyfriend's prom, but the Texan superstar has been enthroned the title, "Queen Bey," by legions of fans ever since.
George Clooney, 1978
While we can agree Amal Clooney is one of the luckiest women to have snagged the most eligible Kentuckian, George Clooney's date at his junior prom at Augusta High School was also pretty fortunate, too.
Reese Witherspoon, 1994
Shania Twain, 1983
Oh, Shania! We've all been there: elbow length gloves, crimped hair, ruffled sweetheart dress, crazy tights, and all. Although she's not a true Southerner, the Canadian-born singer and songwriter is pure country, so we had to include her.
Britney Spears, circa 1997
Not a girl, but not quite a woman yet, the Kentwood, Louisiana, native attended her freshman formal dance, wearing this bold, sparkly red dress. Here, she poses with her dad, Jamie Spears.
Faith Hill, 1986
So nice, we had to include Faith Hill twice! Before setting her sights on Nashville, the superstar singer attended homecoming during her senior year at McLaurin High School in Mississippi. Of course, this was years before she married Tim McGraw and, apparently, hired a stylist.
Ryan Seacrest, 2003
Seacrest, out! Long before his days as a radio personality and television host on American Idol, the new Live with Kelly & Ryan co-host was all smiles at his senior prom at Dunwoody High School in Georgia.
Brad Pitt, 1982
Reportedly, the most handsome man in Hollywood taught his date how to dance to Michael Jackson's hit song, "Rock With You" at their prom at Kickapoo High School in Springfied, Missouri.
Kellie Pickler, circa 2004
The country singer and soon to be co-host of a daytime talk show with Faith Hill wasn't afraid to show off her abs in a slinky red dress at her junior prom in North Carolina.
