A country singer set to marry his high school sweetheart. How sweet is that?
What do you get when you combine a gorgeous fall day, spectacular North Carolina scenery, and a country star wildly in love with his longtime girlfriend? The makings of a perfect proposal, of course.
Such was the backdrop for the beautiful proposal of ‘American Idol’ winner, Scotty McCreery. The Season 10 winner of the popular singing competition met his now fiancée, Gabi Dugal, in Kindergarten in Garner, North Carolina. A smitten young Gabi even took to writing “Mrs. Gabi McCreery” in hearts in her childhood diary, but the duo only started dating during their senior year of high school (sound familiar, Thomas Rhett?).
Nearly six years later, McCreery planned a special day for popping the question. On Tuesday, September 26th, McCreery took Dugal hiking near Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina on their favorite trail. Blessed with a majestic, blue-skied autumn day he waited until they reached the summit to drop to his knee and propose. Presenting a ring that McCreery helped design himself, Dugal said yes to being McCreery’s forever.
“I’ve been planning this moment for so long that it feels surreal for it to have finally happened,” McCreery gushed in an official statement. “Gabi is the perfect girl and my true love, and I cannot wait to begin building our life together as husband and wife.”
Dugal is a recent graduate of the University of North Carolina and works as a pediatric cardiac nurse at Duke University Hospital. After ‘Idol,’ McCreery climbed the Billboard charts to Number One with his debut album Clear as Day. Throughout his work, you can also catch glimpses of McCreery's storybook romance with Dugal—McCreery's music videos for "Trouble with Girls," filmed at their high school, Garner High School, and "Feelin’ It," shot on the Outer Banks both have cameos from Dugal. Currently, he’s working on a new album and promoting his chart-topping nostalgia-tinged single “Five More Minutes" (the music video features an adorable young Dugal). The couple plans to wed in 2018.
Here’s to hoping they include some more of that stunning Old North State landscape in their nuptials.
