When You Ask A Southerner For Directions
It might take you a little longer to get there, but it'll definitely be interesting.
If you can't find your way around the South, ask a local to get you where you need to go. While some folks will give you the exact street names and mileage, most small-town Southerners will share directions in a more colorful way – with landmarks and sight-seeing options along the way. When we were in Leland, MS, we asked Ms. Charlotte Buchanan, Leland resident, how to get to Cicero's Restaurant – a local favorite. "It's just right down yonder," she said.
She threw in the local Stop N Shop grocery store and a few beautiful homes along the route in her directions, and made sure to point out the famous ducks before arriving at the restaurant (which is right before the research station). Wherever you're headed, make sure to get the locals' point of view – it's sure to be a bit more colorful.
