Quite the delicious duo.

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house. Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. Christmas morning, on the other hand, is a different story. December 25 is filled with joy and excitement and chaos...followed by the sounds of children (and husbands) with hungry bellies. Luckily, Ree Drummond—our favorite home cook, blogger, and wife of rugged rancher—has Christmas breakfast covered. Over in Oklahoma, The Pioneer Woman whips up the same ultimate Southern-style breakfast year after year.

Drummond sticks with family tradition for each and every holiday occasion, and Christmas is no different. What is she serving on her adorable holiday collection this year?  A “cowboy staple,” as she calls it: biscuits and gravy.

“Christmas morning, Ladd, the kids, and I wake up, open presents, and have biscuits and gravy,” Drummond told People. The working-farm family keeps it relaxed and low-key, with Drummond noting that it’s one of the few days “we know the spurs are going to stay off the boots.”

Biscuits and gravy is none other than a Southern delicacy. Nothing can compare to the thick, creamy indulgence of sausage gravy poured over fresh-out-of-the-oven buttermilk biscuits. Growing up, any Southerner could head to their hometown’s country-cooking joint for the specialty, unless Mama was being ever so generous and making it at home.

Over the years, The Pioneer Woman has shared two different recipes for the Southern breakfast staple. Her sausage gravy with drop biscuits gives a traditional nod to the dish, while her other recipe keeps the sausage patties and white gravy separate. And she uses canned biscuits (which our Southern hearts will not judge her for), especially on Christmas Day. (Plus, she says the Marlboro Man prefers canned biscuits to homemade. Silly boy.)

Our sausage gravy recipe favors her traditional-style gravy, which doesn’t require much other than sausage, flour, milk, salt and pepper, and some drawstring britches (for post-consumption comfort). If you want to get a little fancy, whip up our Biscuits-and-Gravy Skillet recipe that looks quite pretty, but tastes even better.

Biscuits and gravy might be the most deserving Southern breakfast of all for Christmas morning; any way you smother, dunk, or layer it. Well done, Ree, well done.
