I’ve found it. I used to only dream of a perfect retreat to escape the summer’s dog days, but now I’ve discovered the Old Edwards Inn. Perched along the lazy mountaintop streets of Highlands, it excels at pampering.
It’s the ideal season to be here. This region of North Carolina cools off at night, while the days warm up aplenty for a quick dip in the pool.
Stepping into the Main Street entrance, I’m greeted with a glass of Champagne for check-in. The valet leads me to my room, following a zigzag path. It’s easy to see how this series of connected buildings, dating to the 19th century, has been developed over the decades. The last time I drove by here several years back, the place appeared ramshackle and in need of major repair. Today every inch displays finely handcrafted millwork, gently worn Oriental rugs, antiques, and fine art. In the few short years since it opened, Old Edwards has established itself as one of the best inns with comfortable service and elegant style.
