With this being the 50th anniversary of Southern Living, we were excited to learn that Peanuts Worldwide is also celebrating its 50th Anniversary of the classic children’s TV special, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Family friendly corn mazes across North America are partnering with Peanuts to celebrate the past fifty fun years of watching Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, and the whole Peanuts gang await the arrival of The Great Pumpkin.
Poppell Farms in Odum, GA will be a part of the Peanuts Corn Maze Celebration this year so we spoke with Tonya Poppell about their maze.
Poppell Farms created their first cornfield maze 16 years ago and for the first 3 years they cut it themselves (can you even imagine?). They soon realized that this was back-breaking work and decided to partner with The MAiZE Company that cuts over 260 mazes in the U.S., Canada, Poland, and the UK. The Poppell’s farm and annual corn maze is a family affair with all hands on deck. Last October they had over 30,000 visitors to the maze. After Halloween, they begin selling Christmas trees then take a much deserved break before readying the fields for April planting when the cycle starts all over again.
If the Poppell’s farm isn’t near you, don’t fret. We’ve included a big list of corn mazes across the South commemorating Charlie Brown and the Great Pumpkin. Check out their websites for hours of operation. All of the participating farms have different activities from hayrides to pig races to zip lines to haunted trails—just to name a few. This fall, take some time to visit one of these mazes. It’s a fun, family outing that also helps support local farmers. We salute our American farmers for their sacrifice, hard work, and commitment to providing products that feed and clothe us year-round. Happy Halloween everyone and thank you, Charles Schultz, for creating these lovable characters and for giving us 50 years of It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!
