When in NOLA, most people would rather take in all the sights and sleep when they get back home. This amazing hotel knocks that theory; it's a destination in itself.
Located on the outskirts of the French Quarter, International House feels New York chic mixed with the culture of New Orleans. Each of the 116 rooms is decorated with black-and-white photographs of jazz musicians and books about the city. Guests also have a choice of jazz CDs to play. Everything comes in a shade of beige, giving it a contemporary and clean, not to mention sleek, feeling.
Rates: $159-$429. Get the $99 rate through September 3, based on availability. Ask for the "Southern Living Special." Rate does not apply during festival times. Call in advance. 221 Camp Street; www.ihhotel.com or 1-800-633-5770.
Mills House Hotel, Charleston, South Carolina
Prime. That's how we’d describe the location of this historic hotel. Smack-dab in the historic district, you can easily walk
to the superb shopping and dining for which Charleston is so well known.
We'll admit, the 215 rooms are a bit small, but the hotel's overall charm makes up for the lack of square footage. And a recent $11-million restoration spiffed up the overall feel, bringing in all new furniture, fixtures, and bathroom tiles to this property, which originally opened in 1853.
Rates: $160-$329. Ask for the "Southern Living Heritage Package," which, for $99, includes breakfast and tickets for two to the museum home. Offer is good through December, Monday-Friday only, based on availability. 115 Meeting Street; www.millshouse.com or 1-800-874-9600.
